An experience with history!
On one of the peaks of the Sierra de Rodes we find the monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes, the castle of Verdara or the remains of the megalithic culture. It was built in the 10th century, and until the 14th century it was the main spiritual centre of the county of Empúries. It is made up of the church, the bell tower, the cloister, the sacristies, the living quarters and the abbot's palace. It is built under the remains of the castle of Verdara (13th century), which gave it protection. From the monastery there is a magnificent view of Llançà, Port de la Selva and to the north of Cap de Creus.
Also close to the monastery are the ruins of the medieval town of Santa Cruz de Roda, of which only its pre-Romanesque church, dedicated to Saint Helena, remains standing. The monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes represents Catalan Romanesque architecture of the 10th century, although it underwent several modifications later. In 1930 it was declared a national monument, being considered one of the most important cultural assets of the province of Girona. It can be visited throughout the year with guided tours.
The building is built with terraces to adapt to the terrain, which is very uneven due to the mountain on which it is located. The monastery is located within the natural park of Cap de Creus, created in the 20th century (on March 12, 1998).
